In the Air Tonight: A Thousand Drones Light Up Tampa Bay

Saturday night, we left Harbour Island just before sunset aboard Latitude 24, a twin-engine Pursuit center console owned by one of our neighbors, bound across Tampa Bay for St. Petersburg.

After a quick stop at the city dock to pick up dinner from Frescos Waterfront Bistro , we anchored just north of the St. Pete Pier—next to Wind Therapy, a 46-foot Leopard catamaran and one of the boats we learned to sail on in 2000, just before COVID.

As twilight settled over the bay, more than 1,000 drones rose in perfect synchronization, opening to Phil Collins’ In the Air Tonight.

The display—produced by Sky Elements, according to FOX 13 Tampa Bay—filled the night sky with luminous, constantly shifting scenes of St. Petersburg landmarks and Florida-familiar coastal imagery.

From the aft deck, wearing our Midnight Minaret tee in Heritage Navy, I watched as reflections of color danced across the water—a seamless blend of technology, art, and place. It was a perfect reminder of what makes life on Tampa Bay so special: where community, creativity, and coastline meet under the stars.
